NETBALL Namibia (NN) formerly known as the Association of Netball in Namibia (ANNA) is the national governing body of Netball in Namibia; responsible for the development, promotion, governance and control of netball in the country. In conjunction with its Regional Netball Associations and Associate members, the national body oversees all levels of participation and competition, including the management of player pathways, elite competitions and the national coaching and umpiring programs. At school level, Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) provides playing opportunities for girls starting from primary to secondary school through their programs, while Tertiary Institution Sports Association (TISAN) concentrates on sports in tertiary institutions of Namibia.
The history of Netball in Namibia can be backdated to the 1985`s where formal bodies of administration became fully functional shortly after independence. Netball in Namibia part-took in the first World Cup held in 1991, under the leadership of the renowned sports women and current Minister of Sport Honourable Agnes Tjongarero. In 2013 the U/21 team also participated in the 7th World Youth Championships held in Glasgow and ended 11th in the competition. In 2015 Namibia lost its ranking, it was ranked 31st at the time, The International Netball Federation ranking (INF) ranking is determined by a country`s performance in international games. In order to maintain or improve a ranking, a country should play 8 and more International matches per year. Hit by a series of financial constraints for two consecutive years, in 2017 Namibia finally regained its ranking at the Africa Championships held in Uganda Kampala. Namibia`s current world ranking is 37th. With a committed sponsor coming in 2017, Debmarine Namibia, Netball in Namibia finally raised. In 2017 Netball Namibia hosted its first ever five (5) Nations Tournament Pent Series, in Windhoek, where Namibia ended up 4th, improving their ranking to 32th position. In 2018`s competition the team won this competition moving to 28th position. In 2019 the team won the M1 Nations cup competition held in Singapore, under the leadership of coach Julene Meyer which landed the team on 23rd position.
